F.A.Qs. Keratin Therapy

Keratin Treatment Frequently asked Questions

Q: What results can be expected after the Keratin Treatment?

A: The hair will be more manageable and easy to style, and will be resistant to humidity. It will feel noticeably softer and silkier, with added life, shine and vibrancy.

Q: Is this treatment a relaxer?

A: No. It is a reconditioning treatment made of keratin, plant extracts and collagen that are sealed in to and on to the hair.

Relaxers are designed primarily to straighten curly hair. The keratin treatment is designed primarily to restore health to damaged or abused hair. The result is straight hair. However, if pin-straight hair is what you desire, you will probably still need to invest a small amount of time blow-drying or flat ironing your hair for that result.

Q: How straight will it be?

A: Keratin treatments are not “straighteners" or "relaxers,” but they do reduce volume by 65-95%, depending on the texture and condition. Fluffy, frizzy, wavy hair will become smooth and straight but with a natural look; curly hair will be relaxed to a flatter wave and very curly hair will drop to a softer ringlet. The hair may have a softer, flatter, frizz-free wave, but not be bone-straight when air dried. Blow-out time and effort will be reduced to just a few minutes for a smooth, shiny finish that maintains healthy, natural body and bend. Some clients consider their hair "wash-and-go" after a keratin treatment.

Q: Will I be able to curl my hair after the treatment?

A: Absolutely! The hair won’t be stiff-straight like with permanent straighteners. You can use a round brush for bounce and flips, or curling irons/hot rollers for more major styling.

Q: Can the treatments be done on chemically treated, relaxed or straightened hair?

A: Yes; in fact it works to repair damage caused by chemical treatments. It is recommended to wait two weeks between any chemical services and adjust iron temperature based on hair type as listed in instructions.

Q: Is this product recommended to be used in African American hair?

A: Our formula has been created to be used on previously relaxed African American hair. It will treat, recover and bring back movement to relaxed African American hair.

Q: Can you do the treatment on virgin hair?

A: Yes.

Q: Can you do the treatment on children? If yes, what ages?

A: Yes. Treatment has been previously applied on children age 9 and older.

Q: Can the treatments be done on pregnant or nursing women?

A: We take your health and your baby’s health seriously. We do not recommend to be exposed to any treatment during pregnancy and nursing. When in doubt, we recommend that you seek the advice of your physician, and allow him/her to advice you accordingly.

Q: Under what other health conditions is the treatment not recommended?

A: If you have cancer, suffer from asthma or any severe skin problem, we do not recommend the treatment. Please consult your physician.

Q: Should the hair be colored before or after the treatment application?

A: A great time to have the treatment done is directly after permanent color, semi-permanent color or highlights. The treatment seals the color in, making it last longer and appear more vibrant. If you choose to have color applied after the treatment, we recommend waiting at least two weeks.

Q: Should the hair be cut before or after the treatment?

A: We recommend that the hair be cut after the treatment, as the hair will have a smoother texture and will lie differently.

Q: How much time should be allowed for each client?

A: Time should be determined on an individual basis. We recommend an initial consultation with each client to determine hair length, type and texture. As a general rule, please allow a two- to three-hour window for the entire process.

Q: Can I use any other clarifying Shampoo to wash the hair in the STEP 1?

A: It is sold as a Kit; you should use the Step 1 Clarifying Shampoo.

Q: How many times should I flat iron the hair?

A: Wavy hair about 5-7 times per hair section. Curlier hair about 10-15 times per hair section

Q: Is there a specific way for the flat iron to be applied?

A: The flat iron should be applied in small sections using the help of a fine comb. The flat iron should be applied continuously from top to bottom of every section without stopping. The temperature of the iron should be at 415 F. If the hair is fragile the temperature can be lower to 350 or 380 degrees.

Q: Can I wash my hair after the treatment, and when?

A: Yes. You may wash your hair immediately after treatment.

Q: Can I let my client go home without washing their hair in the salon?

A: No. We recommend the hair to be washed in the salon after every application.

Q: Can I wear pins, clips, elastic wraps, headbands, sunglasses, etc. in my hair for the first 4 days?

A: Yes.

Q: Can I wet my hair for the first 4 days?

A: Yes.

Q: Can I go into a pool or the ocean after the treatment?

A: Yes. Always hydrate your hair to maintain it healthy, and rinse well after swimming. The more you expose your hair to chlorine and salt the less time the effects will last.

Q: Can I use hair spray, gel, mousse, or any other products on my hair after the treatment?

A: Yes, after shampoo you can use your preferred styling products. Continuous intensive conditioning is always recommended.

Q: What kind of shampoo and conditioner should be used?

A: Keratin Maintenance Line Shampoo & Conditioner (sodium chloride-free formula) or Keratin Color Care Shampoo & Conditioner (sodium chloride- and sulfate-free formula). See our maintenance line of sulfate-free shampoo for different types of hair.

Q: Will the hair be permanently straight after it has been washed?

A: Since the product is thermo active, you will need the heat of the blow drier to make the hair straight.

Q: How long will the treatment stay in my hair?

A: About three to four months depending on application, type of hair, lifestyle, maintenance and adherence to all aftercare instructions.

Q: How often can the Keratin treatment be performed?

A: The treatment can be done as often as every 4 to 6 weeks.

Q: Is the reapplication of the Keratin treatment done on the entire head or just on the new growth?

A: Reapplication is done on the entire head.
